About Jake’s

A Five Points Bar With History Behind It

Jake’s is more than a neighborhood bar on Devine Street — it’s part of the ongoing story of Five Points in Columbia, South Carolina, with deep ties to the district’s shopping, music, nightlife, and dog-friendly culture.

Jake’s Today

A Columbia Bar Built Around Patio Nights, Good Food & Familiar Faces

Today, Jake’s is known as a relaxed Five Points bar with cold beer, bar food, patio energy, weekly specials, and one of the most recognizable dog-friendly traditions in Columbia.

Neighborhood Favorite

Just a few minutes from the University of South Carolina, Jake’s has become the kind of place where locals, students, and regulars all end up crossing paths. It works as a patio stop, a late-night food spot, a pint-night bar, and a place to settle in with friends.

The energy has always been part of the draw: cold drafts, familiar bar food, and a back deck that gives Jake’s a feel that’s hard to fake. That same easygoing atmosphere is also what made Yappy Hour such a recognizable part of the bar’s identity.

For people looking for a bar in Five Points Columbia SC with some real neighborhood personality, Jake’s still feels tied to the district around it instead of separated from it.

The Building Story

Long Before Jake’s, 2112 Devine Had a Life of Its Own

The building Jake’s occupies has been part of Five Points history for decades, shifting from retail to live music to the neighborhood bar people know today.

1930s
2112 Devine Street originally operated as Riley’s Department Store, and the site was already a popular stop in the district. During the 1959 pantyhose craze, women reportedly lined up around the block there.
1984
The building became home to Rockafellas’, a live music venue that helped define a chapter of Five Points nightlife and hosted acts including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Green Day, Dave Matthews Band, and Hootie & the Blowfish.
1998
Rockafellas’ closed after an eviction notice was discovered and announced from the stage during a live show. The venue quickly became part of Columbia music lore, and its memory still hangs over the address for people who remember that era.
Today
Jake’s carries that same sense of place forward in a different way — less music hall, more neighborhood bar — but still tied to the independent, local spirit that makes Five Points one of Columbia’s most recognizable districts.

One Address, Different Eras

Before Jake’s, this address was tied to one of the better-known music venue stories in Columbia. That history gives the building a sense of continuity — a place people have kept returning to for decades, even as the name and experience changed.

Your Yappy Place, Guaranteed

Jake’s became known for giving dog owners a real place in the social life of Five Points. Yappy Hour helped turn the patio into something bigger than a seating area — it became part of the bar’s personality and one of the reasons people still talk about Jake’s the way they do.
